Things to Do in Veliko Tarnovo — A Complete Guide

Published: 1 March 2026

Veliko Tarnovo is one of Bulgaria's most captivating cities — a place where medieval history meets vibrant modern life along the dramatic curves of the Yantra River. Whether you're visiting for a weekend or staying a full week, there's no shortage of things to see and do.

Tsarevets Fortress

No trip to Veliko Tarnovo is complete without a visit to Tsarevets Fortress, the symbol of the Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1393). Perched on a hill above the Yantra River, the fortress once housed the royal palace and the Patriarchal Cathedral. Today it offers sweeping panoramic views of the city and hosts the famous Sound and Light show — a spectacular audio-visual spectacle projected onto the fortress walls that runs on select evenings throughout the year.

Samovodska Charshiya

Step back in time at Samovodska Charshiya, the 19th-century artisan quarter. Craftspeople still practice traditional trades here — coppersmithing, pottery, woodcarving and lace-making. It's the perfect place to pick up an authentic souvenir and sample local street food.

Trapezitsa Hill

Across the valley from Tsarevets lies Trapezitsa Hill, home to the ruins of dozens of medieval churches and the royal residences of the Bulgarian nobility. The ongoing archaeological excavations make this a fascinating living-history site.

Arbanasi Village

Just 6 km from the city centre, the village of Arbanasi is an architectural reserve with beautifully preserved Revival-era houses, painted churches and a quiet, rural atmosphere. The Church of the Nativity of Christ is renowned for its extraordinary interior frescoes covering every wall and ceiling.

The Yantra Gorge & Riverside Walk

Follow the riverside path along the Yantra River for a leisurely walk through the gorge. The views of the old houses climbing the hillside above you are unlike anything else in Bulgaria.

Practical Tips

- Getting around: The old town is best explored on foot. Comfortable shoes are a must — the streets are steep and cobblestoned. - Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer is warm and lively but busier. - Staying in the city: Hotel Akvaya is located centrally, making it an ideal base for exploring all the attractions above. Free parking and breakfast included.
